The Minnesota Vikings’ defensive trajectory showed promise last season, but the front office recognizes the need for further enhancement to reach championship-level standards. Brian Flores, the architect of the defensive turnaround, remains a crucial element, and despite his success, coaching vacancies did not lead to interviews—potentially due to ongoing lawsuits against the NFL for racial discrimination.

As the season progressed, injuries and vulnerabilities in Flores’ defense became apparent. The defense ranked 18th in EPA/Play allowed, conceded the 10th-most passing yards, and struggled late in the season amid quarterback uncertainties. Nevertheless, this marked an improvement from the 31st-ranked defense in 2022 under Ed Donatell.
The Vikings had one player at the DL & ED positions that met the following criteria:
– 25+ pressures.

Danielle Hunter excelled under Flores, finishing fifth in the NFL in sacks, while D.J. Wonnum also had a productive season with eight sacks. However, the defensive line lacked impact overall, with only one player accumulating 25 pressures.
To address this, the Vikings have avenues to bolster their defensive talent. The 2024 draft class offers promising edge rushers, with options available at any pick. Elite prospects like Dallas Turner, Jared Verse, or Laiatu Latu could be considered at pick No. 11, while the late first or early second round offers alternatives like Chop Robinson, Chris Braswell, or Adisa Isaac.
Dallas Turner. EDGE1.
Doesn’t have the deepest pass rush bag (neither did Will Anderson), but he’s so refined at what he does.
Speed to power, long arm stab, even a ghost move. Stout against the run/setting edges. Coverage drop ability. Total package. pic.twitter.com/dvEI2pcCPp

Dallas Turner, particularly intriguing at the 11th selection, brings a mix of power and agility. Despite being 20 lbs. lighter than Hunter, Turner displays impressive strength, a quick first step, and versatile skills. He excels in sealing edges, disrupting run lanes, dropping back in coverage, and possesses formidable pass-rushing abilities. The prospect of pairing Turner with Hunter, considering contract issues, presents an enticing opportunity for the Vikings.

The Vikings aim to fortify their defense, with the draft providing ample options, notably the prospect of Dallas Turner, to elevate their performance and build on the positive strides made under Flores.
