Unforgettable Loss: Lions Knock Red Wings Off Mantle…
By securing a 24-23 victory against the Rams, the Lions have now become the latest Detroit professional sports franchise to triumph in a postseason game, replacing the Red Wings in this regard. The Red Wings had held this distinction for almost eight years until the Lions’ recent win.
Before the Lions’ triumph on Sunday, the Red Wings had maintained their status as the most recent Detroit pro sports team to win a playoff game since April 17, 2016. On that date, goals from Andreas Athanasiou and Henrik Zetterberg, along with a 16-save shutout by Petr Mrazek, led the Red Wings to a 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference opening-round series.
With the Lions now advancing in the playoffs, they find themselves just two wins away from reaching their first Super Bowl. Their next challenge will be against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and interestingly, the Red Wings will also be hosting the Lightning on the same day.
Lyon, expressing appreciation for the passionate fan support in Detroit, noted the remarkable enthusiasm for both the Red Wings and the Lions. He acknowledged that such fervent support is not universal and emphasized that Detroit is indeed a great sports town where people actively root for their teams on a daily basis, whether it’s the Lions, Red Wings, or any other team on the list.
