Buffalo Sabres: Scratching Ryan Johnson for any more games would make no sense…
The Buffalo Sabres have started January 2024 off with a 3-1-0 record, and if they’re finally getting hot, they must play the right players if they’re healthy.
In the early days of January 2024, the Buffalo Sabres have shown promise with a 3-1-0 record. To capitalize on this momentum, it’s crucial to field the best players, especially if they’re in good health. However, the recent handling of rookie defenseman Ryan Johnson has raised eyebrows.
Johnson returned to action in a recent victory against the Ottawa Senators, marking his first appearance since the team’s defeat on New Year’s Eve. The hiatus of almost two weeks between games seems unjustifiable, particularly considering Johnson’s stellar performance throughout the season.
Despite his impactful contributions, Johnson has been granted a mere average of 14 minutes and 4 seconds of ice time per game. Although this figure has marginally increased in the last two matches to 17 minutes and 25 seconds and 15 minutes and 10 seconds, respectively, such limitations on Johnson’s playing time are becoming increasingly unacceptable. His standout performances have been a shining light in an otherwise inconsistent defensive lineup.
Johnson’s defensive prowess is evident in his stats, with three hits, 10 takeaways, and an impressive 24 blocks, including six in the latest game against Ottawa. His on-ice presence has also significantly hindered opponents, reflected in the Sabres’ on-ice save percentages of 94.5 at even strength and 95.1 at 5-on-5 when Johnson is on the ice.
Moreover, the Sabres exhibit superior possession metrics with Johnson on the ice, boasting a Corsi For Percentage (CF%) of 51.7 and a Fenwick For (FF%) of 51.5 at 5-on-5. These numbers indicate Johnson’s positive impact on facilitating puck transitions for the team.
Given the team’s current win-now mentality, it’s imperative to elevate Johnson’s role. The increased ice time in the past two games should serve as a precursor to further opportunities for Johnson. The Sabres must prioritize giving ice time to impactful players, and Johnson undoubtedly falls into this category.
Even if it necessitates benching a veteran defenseman like Erik Johnson or Connor Clifton, the team should make room for Ryan Johnson. His outstanding performances this season should not be overlooked, especially when the team is grappling with on-ice challenges. The time has come to recognize and utilize the potential of Ryan Johnson within the Buffalo Sabres lineup.
