This week, Pete Carroll initially hinted at continuing his role as the Seahawks’ head coach for a 15th season. However, following a meeting with owner Jody Allen, there has been a change in plans, with Carroll transitioning into an advisory position within the organization. The timing of this shift and Carroll’s public statements about his coaching future have raised questions about his true desire to remain in a coaching role. At 72 years old, taking on a coaching position outside of Seattle after such an extended tenure there would be unexpected.
Despite the uncertainty, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero suggested on the Rich Eisen Show that Carroll could be a potential candidate for coaching if the right opportunity arises, particularly with a team possessing a win-now roster. Carroll addressed his situation further in an interview with Brock Huard and Mike Salk of Seattle Sports on Friday. While indicating his current commitment to Seattle, he acknowledged that the possibility of returning to an NFL sideline has not been entirely ruled out.
Carroll expressed his openness to coaching but emphasized the challenge of finding the right fit. He mentioned having the energy, thought, and willingness for coaching but stressed the importance of the right opportunity. He stated, “I’m open to everything, but I’m not holding my breath on that. There’s a lot of world out here that I’m excited about challenging and going after. So if that happens, it happens. We’ll see.”
The Super Bowl-winning coach also highlighted a potential divergence in vision between himself and the team’s ownership, pointing out that they are not football people. This raises intrigue about how Carroll’s new advisory role in Seattle will develop, assuming he does not pursue an external coaching opportunity.
With the New England Patriots already making a head coach hire, promoting Jerod Mayo to replace Bill Belichick, there are still seven coaching vacancies across the league. Carroll’s comments suggest that his immediate future remains uncertain to some extent, leaving the possibility open for him to change course and explore new coaching opportunities. The dynamics of his relationship with the Seahawks organization and his vision for the team will likely play a significant role in determining how his role in Seattle evolves.
