Ottawa Senators’ goaltender Anton Forsberg exited the game against the Buffalo Sabres after sustaining a lower-body injury. The incident occurred in the first period following a rush by Sabres’ forward Zach Benson, where Forsberg executed an awkward play resulting in significant pain. Notably, there was no contact from any player of either team during the incident. The severity of the injury forced Forsberg to be assisted off the ice by the team trainer, unable to put weight on one of his legs.
This injury raises concerns for Forsberg and the Senators, given his history of serious knee injuries. In the previous season, he suffered a torn MCL in both knees after a collision on the ice, causing him to miss the remainder of the year. Although he began the current season with a clean bill of health, this recent injury jeopardizes his ongoing participation.
Adding to the team’s injury woes, Josh Norris had recently suffered an unspecified injury in a prior game against the Calgary Flames, leaving uncertainty about his return to the lineup. Joonas Korpisalo stepped in as Forsberg’s replacement for the ongoing game against the Sabres, leaving a considerable amount of time for potential developments, given the early occurrence of the injury.
If Forsberg’s absence extends, the team is likely to summon Mads Sogaard from the Belleville Senators to create a goaltending tandem with Korpisalo in Ottawa. Sogaard, who played 19 NHL games last season when Forsberg was sidelined, exhibited a record of 8-6-3 with a 3.32 GAA and .889 SV%. In the current season with Belleville, Sogaard has showcased strong performance, boasting an 8-5-2 record, a 2.48 GAA, and a .920 SV%. The potential collaboration between Korpisalo and Sogaard becomes crucial for the Senators to maintain stability in the goaltending position during Forsberg’s absence.
