Sheffield Wednesday has experienced an alarming goal drought, failing to score in their last six Championship games and approaching nearly ten hours of game time without finding the back of the net. This has led to increasing calls for Bailey Cadamarteri to be promoted to the first team.
Cadamarteri, an 18-year-old striker, has been in sensational form for Sheffield Wednesday’s Development Squad, tallying double-digit goals under the guidance of manager Neil Thompson. He recently scored his 11th goal of the season during a 4-0 victory over Coventry City.
Despite only having one senior appearance for Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Trophy last season and being on the bench for a league fixture against Huddersfield earlier this month, fans are eager to see Cadamarteri given a chance due to the first team’s struggles in front of goal. They have gone nearly ten hours without scoring.
Manager Danny Röhl appears to be open to the idea of including Cadamarteri in the first team. Röhl confirmed that Cadamarteri had joined the first team in training recently and continued his goal-scoring form for the under-21s. Röhl recognized Cadamarteri as a high-potential striker and expressed his willingness to promote him to the first team when the time is right. He emphasized the importance of transitioning players from the academy to the first team and indicated that they are considering this move.
Sheffield Wednesday faces a significant South Yorkshire derby this weekend as fellow strugglers Rotherham United visit Hillsborough. This match could potentially see Cadamarteri making his debut for the first team. Additionally, 32-year-old Marvin Johnson, who was sidelined by the previous manager, Xisco Munoz, may also make a return to the first team.
Johnson played for 45 minutes in a Development squad match on Tuesday, and Röhl stated that he would be evaluated by the coaching staff to determine if he will be reintegrated into the squad for the game against Rotherham on Sunday.
