Hull City have received a significant boost as the red card handed to key loan midfielder Tyler Morton during the match against Sheffield Wednesday has been overturned following a successful appeal. The Liverpool loanee, who was sent off in the first half of the New Year’s Day game at Hillsborough, will no longer face a three-match suspension.
Morton’s dismissal, attributed to a challenge on Owls winger Djeidi Gassama by referee Darren Bond after 35 minutes, initially meant he would miss the FA Cup clash with Birmingham City and Championship fixtures against Norwich City and Sunderland.
Hull’s chief, Liam Rosenior, expressed his disagreement with the red card decision, stating, “It’s not a red card.” He highlighted the difficulty of the referee’s job and mentioned plans to appeal, emphasizing that Morton’s actions didn’t warrant a three-game suspension. Rosenior acknowledged the potential impact on the team’s playing style and expressed frustration over the outcome, which affected the happiness of the fans. Describing Morton as an outstanding player, he stressed the midfielder’s positive disciplinary record.
The news of the red card being overturned is especially relieving for Rosenior, given that another midfielder, Jean-Michael Seri, is currently on duty at the African Cup of Nations. The successful appeal allows Hull City to retain Morton’s services, providing a boost to the team’s lineup and easing concerns about the absence of key players during upcoming matches.
