QPR manager Marti Cifuentes commended his team for a significant improvement in their performance during the goalless draw against Ipswich. This positive response followed a lackluster display in a 2-0 defeat to Millwall on Boxing Day, marking their third consecutive loss. Cifuentes expressed satisfaction with his players’ commitment and competitive spirit throughout the game at Portman Road, characterizing it as a commendable rebound from the disappointing Boxing Day performance.
Despite the goalless result, QPR had several close calls, with Steve Cook’s header from Kenneth Paal’s corner hitting the post in the first half. The team also unsuccessfully appealed for a penalty after an apparent foul on Paul Smyth and should have been awarded one in stoppage time when Reggie Cannon’s cross was handled by Kayden Jackson.
Cifuentes acknowledged these marginal situations and suggested that the team could have secured a victory. While generally refraining from criticizing referees, Cifuentes pointed out that in recent games, there were instances that could have favored QPR. He particularly emphasized a clear handball in the final minutes of the match.
The second half’s start was delayed due to a medical emergency in the crowd, leading to a six-minute warm-up period for the teams. Chris Willock, dealing with fitness concerns, was substituted for Smyth during this delay. Cifuentes explained the challenge of keeping players warm during such interruptions and noted that Willock, who had been on the edge physically, felt unprepared after the extended break.
Additionally, Ilias Chair, who suffered an injury in the second half, is currently undergoing assessment to determine the extent of the issue.
