Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is steadfast in his determination to retain the core of his first-team squad at Portman Road beyond the upcoming January transfer window. Speaking to TWTD, McKenna emphasized that preserving the unity of the team is a top priority for him, as the Tractor Boys currently hold the second position and are well-placed to continue their push for promotion despite recent setbacks against Leeds United and Leicester City.
While Ipswich Town’s recent results have not severely impacted their promotion prospects, the proximity of Southampton in the standings adds an element of caution. A disruptive transfer window with significant player movement could potentially prove costly for Ipswich, who had previously held a strong position alongside Leicester.
Vaclav Hladky and Leif Davis, notable performers this season, could attract interest during the transfer window. McKenna acknowledged that players such as Sam Morsy, Massimo Luongo, Wes Burns, Conor Chaplin, and Nathan Broadhead have been instrumental in the team’s success so far, and there is uncertainty about whether they will draw interest from other clubs.
While the potential departure of key players would be disappointing for McKenna, both he and the club are eager to retain the current squad. McKenna expressed, “One priority going into every window is keeping your group together if you’re doing well. That’s set in stone for us, to be honest. Anything that we bring in, of course, we’ve lost an important player, but other than that, anything that we bring in will hopefully add to what’s already here.”
McKenna’s commitment to stability aligns with the success Ipswich Town has enjoyed, with minimal changes despite their promotion at the end of the previous season. The manager’s prolonged tenure has contributed to the team’s stability. While the possibility of offloading key players might open avenues for impressive signings, McKenna recognizes the importance of allowing new additions time to settle. Consequently, it appears unlikely that there will be significant player movement at Portman Road in the upcoming transfer window, as this could potentially disrupt the team’s established rhythm and success.
