Insider reveals 3 “ugly” reasons why NFL teams might avoid hiring Lou Anarumo as head coach…

Lou Anarumo, the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator, seemed poised for potential head coaching opportunities after the impressive performance of the Bengals defense in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. However, despite expectations, Anarumo had only a few interviews at the start of 2023, and teams ultimately took different directions in their coaching choices. As the coaching carousel begins again, there are three primary reasons why NFL teams might be hesitant to consider Anarumo for a head coaching position.

Firstly, age plays a role in Anarumo’s perceived appeal. Turning 58 next August, he would become the ninth-oldest head coach in the NFL if hired. Recent trends in coaching hires have favored younger candidates, with an emphasis on fresh perspectives and energy. Bengals fans are familiar with this trend, given that current head coach Zac Taylor is the fifth-youngest in the league.

Another factor working against Anarumo is the league’s inclination toward offensive-minded head coaches. Teams have been hiring coaches with a strong offensive background, often seeking individuals who can develop and lead young quarterbacks. Anarumo’s defensive focus might not align with this prevalent trend, as many teams aim to pair a young quarterback with an offensive-minded head coach for optimal development.

The most significant hindrance to Anarumo’s head coaching prospects, however, stems from the performance of the Bengals defense in the current season. While the defense was lauded in the previous seasons, it has struggled in 2023. The unit has allowed the third-highest passing yards and the sixth-highest rushing yards in the league. In terms of total defense, the Bengals rank second in yards allowed per game, trailing only the Washington Commanders. The defense’s vulnerability to explosive plays has been a particular concern, possibly stemming from a young secondary. This decline in defensive performance during the 2023 season diminishes Anarumo’s standing as a top head coaching candidate.

Despite Anarumo’s previous success with the Bengals defense, the combination of age, defensive specialization, and the team’s struggles in the current season could dissuade NFL teams from pursuing him as a head coach. As coaching vacancies arise, teams may prioritize younger, offensive-minded candidates who can bring a fresh perspective and align with prevailing trends in the league.
