Following a disheartening loss to the Detroit Lions on Christmas Eve, the Minnesota Vikings are contemplating a change at the quarterback position, evaluating the possibility of benching Nick Mullens in favor of rookie Jaren Hall, according to a report by Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
In the aftermath of the game, ESPN’s Kevin Seifert initially indicated that there were no indications Mullens wouldn’t be the starting quarterback in the upcoming Week 17 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Mullens, who threw four interceptions in the Lions game, including a decisive one in the final minute, contributed to the Vikings’ 30-24 loss and the Lions securing the NFC North division title.
Mullens, in his two starts, has showcased the ability to lead the Vikings’ offense to an average of 407 yards per game. However, his performance has been marred by six interceptions in two closely contested losses.
The potential shift to rookie Jaren Hall signals a departure from initial sentiments at U.S. Bank Stadium, where there was no indication of a change after the Lions game. Hall, a fifth-round pick last April, had a Week 9 start in place of Mullens and displayed promise by completing 5-of-6 pass attempts for 78 yards before an injury forced him out of the game.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler previously reported on December 15 that the Vikings are intrigued by Hall’s potential and may turn to him if Mullens’ performance cools down. The team sees Hall as a quarterback with significant upside and poise.
On a four-year, $4.1 million rookie deal, Hall is the only quarterback under contract beyond the 2024 season, making it advantageous for the Vikings to explore his capabilities after nearly a year in the system.
The final decision on the starting quarterback will be crucial for the Vikings, who hold a 19.2% chance of making the postseason, according to ESPN’s Power Index. Winning their remaining games is virtually necessary to secure a playoff spot.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is likely to address the quarterback situation in his Tuesday news conference, with a decision expected in the coming days.
Nick Mullens, despite his confidence in his abilities, has faced scrutiny for his recent performances. The sixth-year veteran, known for his gunslinger mentality, has shown a tendency to attempt risky throws. His errors in the Lions game were attributed to a misjudgment of his arm strength, particularly on the final interception.
Mullens, reflecting on his performance, acknowledged the need to take the next step in his development, emphasizing the importance of improved ball placement. The quarterback decision moving forward will undoubtedly have significant implications for the Vikings as they navigate their postseason aspirations.
