As Southampton FC eyes the January transfer window to bolster their quest for a return to the Premier League, recent rumors from St. Mary’s suggest that several players might depart in the coming weeks.

Manager Russell Martin faced the challenge of managing numerous arrivals and key departures during a busy summer transfer window after the club’s relegation from the top flight. Despite losing key players, Southampton strategically reinforced their squad, currently occupying a playoff spot with a comfortable lead over competitors.

One player likely to make an exit is goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, who, after a period as Southampton’s primary choice in goal, has found himself on the sidelines. With only one appearance in the EFL Cup first round defeat to Gillingham this season, McCarthy serves as a backup to first-choice Gavin Bazunu.

The 34-year-old has garnered interest from Premier League side Everton, with reports indicating a “strong interest” from the Toffees ahead of the January window. Although McCarthy remains under contract, the prospect of limited playing time under Martin could prompt Southampton to consider offers for his departure.

Another potential departure is midfielder Joe Aribo, signed from Scottish side Rangers amid initial excitement. However, the move has not lived up to expectations for either party, and Southampton may seek to part ways. Despite making 44 appearances for the club, Aribo has only contributed two goals and no assists.

While featuring in 17 games this season, he has started only four, indicating a lack of preference under Martin. Although under contract until 2026, Southampton might be inclined to cut their losses if interest in the 27-year-old arises during the January transfer window.

The likelihood of Che Adams leaving Southampton in January has increased over time, especially considering his contract expiring at the end of the season. The 27-year-old forward, who has attracted interest from Premier League side Burnley, could be on the move.
Adams has performed well when given the opportunity this season, but with Southampton having additional attacking options and potential reinforcements in January, the club might opt to allow his departure to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

As Southampton navigates the complexities of the transfer market, these potential departures could reshape the squad and contribute to the club’s pursuit of promotion.
