Seahawks issues fitness updates as the highly-experienced quarterback returns fully on practice field, but sad as defensive stars remain out…

Geno Smith is poised to reclaim the starting quarterback role for the Seattle Seahawks after a two-game absence due to a groin injury. Smith, who participated fully in Wednesday’s practice, is expected to lead the team against the Tennessee Titans this Sunday. Despite being close to starting in the previous game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Seahawks opted to give him an additional week of rest to ensure his full recovery.

The decision proved beneficial for Seattle, as backup Drew Lock guided the team to a late touchdown, securing a 20-17 victory over the Eagles. This win ended a four-game losing streak and positioned the Seahawks in the midst of a competitive NFC playoff race. Barring any setbacks, Smith is set to resume his starting role, with coach Pete Carroll expressing optimism about his condition.

Carroll emphasized the need to assess Smith’s well-being throughout the week, indicating that the coaching staff aims to avoid overtaxing him during practice sessions. Smith showcased his prowess in his most recent start, throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to a rushing touchdown, during the 41-35 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on November 30.

While Smith’s return is on the horizon, uncertainties surround star defender Jamal Adams. Carroll disclosed on Tuesday that Adams sat out the game against the Eagles due to persistent knee pain and discomfort as he continues his recovery from a torn quadriceps tendon suffered at the beginning of the 2022 season. Carroll’s tone grew more pessimistic a day later, casting doubt on Adams’ availability for the upcoming week.

Seahawks QB back fully on practice field, defensive stars remain out

Adams, who returned from a significant leg injury in Week 4, played in six consecutive games before missing the Week 11 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Despite participating in the subsequent three games against San Francisco and Dallas, Adams was absent in the recent victory over Dallas.

The lingering nature of his recovery has led to discussions about the possibility of sidelining Adams for the remainder of the season, although Carroll noted that the decision remains ongoing.

The Seahawks face another defensive concern with rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who might miss his second consecutive game due to a hip pointer sustained in the Week 14 loss to San Francisco. Carroll acknowledged Witherspoon’s improved mobility but emphasized the uncertainty surrounding his availability, highlighting the need to take the situation day by day.
