Kirk Cousins’ Super Bowl Return: A Hopeful Conversation Amidst Rehabilitation Challenges…

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins hinted at the possibility of returning for the 2023 season, revealing on Adam Schefter’s podcast that he and his wife, Julie, have discussed the prospect. While addressing the topic, Cousins poured a bit of cold water on the idea, emphasizing that if the Vikings reached the Super Bowl without him, they might not want to play him in the game. Despite the uncertainty, he expressed eagerness to cheer on the team and receive a Super Bowl ring.

Cousins suffered a right Achilles tear on October 29 during a game against the Green Bay Packers, underwent surgery, and has since been on injured reserve. The injury halted what had been a standout season for Cousins, where he amassed 2,331 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and only five interceptions before the setback. Currently, his sole passes are to his son, Cooper, in their basement from his couch.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell swiftly dismissed the notion of Cousins returning for the playoffs but acknowledged that the quarterback’s rehabilitation progress is exceeding expectations. O’Connell commended Cousins for his dedication to both his craft as a quarterback and his commitment to the rehabilitation process, expressing confidence in a full return whenever that may be.

The Vikings, currently at a 7-7 record, face the Detroit Lions on Sunday and must win their remaining games while hoping for the Lions to lose in order to secure the NFC North. Additionally, winning two out of their last three games is crucial for the Vikings to boost their chances of securing a Wild Card playoff spot. The playoff race adds an extra layer of anticipation for Cousins’ potential return, although the timeline remains uncertain.
