Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick expressed deep disappointment following their 2-1 defeat at home to Hull City. Boro initially took the lead in the championship match with Emmanuel Latte Lath’s goal in the sixth minute, marking his seventh of the season. However, Hull City, under the guidance of Liam Rosenior, staged a late comeback, with substitutes Ruben Vinagre, Adama Traore, and Ozan Tufan making a significant impact.
Carrick, despite acknowledging his team’s strong performance against a formidable opponent, couldn’t conceal his frustration. Reflecting on the game, he remarked, “I thought we played ever so well. Against a good team, we gave them next to nothing, played some really good football, looked dangerous, and had so many opportunities. Bitterly disappointed. I’d have been bitterly disappointed with a draw after that, to be honest, with all the good things that I saw in the game.”
The manager emphasized the need for increased ruthlessness and regretted the lack of quality in the final pass or finish that could have secured a more favorable outcome. Despite dominating play, Boro failed to capitalize on numerous clear-cut chances in the first half.
Carrick praised his team’s pressing, noting, “I thought we pressed fantastically well. I don’t think they had a spell in the game where they opened us up, which they can do because they’re a good team.” He highlighted effective defensive strategies, high pressing, and control of the ball. Carrick made tactical tweaks that he believed worked well, expressing pride in the team’s performance before they suffered a late setback.
Despite the defeat, Carrick remains optimistic about the positive aspects of the game, acknowledging the team’s strong efforts and expressing pride in their overall performance.
