Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is poised to make history with one of the most remarkable rookie seasons in NFL history. According to Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith, Stroud is on track to surpass Andrew Luck’s rookie passing record of 4,374 yards set in 2012. The rookie QB is projected to throw for an impressive 5,015 yards this season. Additionally, Stroud is aiming for the second-highest number of passing touchdowns by a rookie, with a projected 28, following Justin Herbert’s record of 31 set in 2020.
As of Week 14, Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, ranks second in the league for passing yards (3,540) and is tied for eighth in passing touchdowns (20). His stellar performance is a significant factor in the Houston Texans’ potential return to the playoffs, with an 80 percent chance predicted by The New York Times simulator, marking a possible end to their postseason drought since 2019.

Despite the rarity of rookies being considered for the MVP award, Stroud has garnered attention, with oddschecker placing him within the top 10 MVP odds. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell notes that while rookies historically haven’t won the MVP, Stroud’s exceptional play, characterized by downfield throws and smart decision-making, is changing that narrative.
