In a breaking development that has shaken the fanbase, head coach Brent Pry confirmed earlier today the departure of two of the team’s most talented players, dealing a major blow to the program just months ahead of the 2025 season kickoff.
Speaking during a scheduled press conference, Pry revealed that star wide receiver Malik Rutherford and standout defensive back Jalen Stroman have both officially entered the transfer portal, ending their time in Blacksburg. The announcement caught many by surprise, as both players were expected to be key contributors and leaders on the field this fall.
“It’s tough to lose guys of this caliber,” Pry said. “Malik and Jalen have been great teammates and competitors. We wish them nothing but success in their next chapters, but of course, it’s a hit to our roster.”

Known for his speed and ability to stretch defenses vertically, his departure leaves a major void in the Hokies’ passing game.

Jalen Stroman, one of the team’s most experienced defensive backs and a leader in the secondary, started 11 games last season and led the team in tackles. His physicality and football IQ made him a centerpiece of the Hokies’ defensive unit.
Both players had NFL potential and were expected to be among the most impactful veterans on a Hokies team that showed flashes of progress in 2024 under Pry.
A Critical Offseason Just Got Harder
The departures come at a time when Virginia Tech was hoping to build continuity and take a leap forward in Year 3 under Pry. After a 7–6 finish in 2024 and signs of momentum late in the season, this latest roster shakeup could force the coaching staff to reshuffle its depth chart and rely more heavily on incoming freshmen and transfer additions.
“It’s part of the game now,” Pry added. “The portal changes things fast, and we’ll adapt. We have faith in the guys still in that locker room.”
