In a major shake-up behind the bench, the Chicago Blackhawks have officially announced the departure of head coach Anders Sorensen, ending his tenure with the organization. In the same statement, the team confirmed that Greg Moore will take over as the new head coach heading into the next chapter of the franchise’s rebuild.
The decision to part ways with Sorensen comes amid a larger effort to reshape the team’s on-ice identity and development strategy, particularly as the Blackhawks continue to lean heavily on a wave of young talent led by Connor Bedard and several top prospects.
“We want to thank Anders for his dedication, leadership, and passion during his time with the organization,” said GM Kyle Davidson in a press release. “He has been an important part of our development pipeline, and we wish him all the best moving forward.”
Sorensen, who had previously served as head coach of the AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs and later as part of the Blackhawks’ coaching staff, was well-regarded for his work with younger players. However, organizational sources indicate the front office was looking for a new voice and direction to align with the franchise’s long-term goals.
Enter Greg Moore, the newly named head coach who arrives with a strong reputation for player development and success at the AHL level. Moore previously coached the Toronto Marlies and has worked with several NHL-ready players during his time with the Maple Leafs’ farm system.
“Greg brings a modern, energetic approach to the game,” Davidson said. “He has a strong track record of building relationships with young players and preparing them for the NHL. That’s exactly what we need at this stage in our growth.”
Moore, 39, is expected to bring a more aggressive, up-tempo system that suits the speed and skill of Chicago’s budding core, including Lukas Reichel, Kevin Korchinski, and Frank Nazar.
“This is a tremendous opportunity,” Moore said in his introductory press conference. “The Blackhawks are a storied franchise with an incredibly bright future. I’m honored to be part of that next step.”
As the Blackhawks continue to reshape their identity in a new era, the move signals a fresh direction — and perhaps a renewed sense of urgency to return to contention.
Change is in the air in Chicago — and Greg Moore is now the man tasked with leading the next generation.
