The New York Mets have been dealt another blow as third baseman Mark Vientos is sidelined due to a left ankle injury. Vientos initially injured his left ankle on August 4, 2024, when he fouled a ball off it during a game against the Los Angeles Angels. He was subsequently scratched from the lineup on August 10, 2024, due to soreness in the same ankle.
Despite efforts to manage the injury, Vientos’ condition has not improved as hoped, leading the Mets to place him on the 10-day injured list retroactive to August 16, 2024, due to left ankle tendonitis. This marks another setback for the young infielder, who has previously dealt with wrist and foot injuries in his career.
Vientos’ absence adds to the Mets’ injury woes, as the team has been struggling with the health of key players throughout the season. In his limited appearances this season, Vientos has shown potential, posting a .298 batting average with 10 home runs and an OPS of .922 over 155 plate appearances.
The Mets will need to rely on their depth to fill the void left by Vientos at third base. Veteran infielder Jose Iglesias has been covering the hot corner in Vientos’ absence and is expected to continue in that role. The team is hopeful that Vientos will recover swiftly and return to bolster their lineup as they push towards the postseason.
Fans and teammates alike are sending their best wishes to Vientos for a speedy recovery, recognizing his contributions and the energy he brings to the clubhouse. The Mets will provide updates on his condition as more information becomes available.
