Striker Che Adams of Southampton appears to be in need of a change to reignite his career, according to journalist Dean Jones. Adams’ performance has been affected since speculation surrounding his future surfaced during the summer transfer window, and Jones suggests potential destinations for the player in the upcoming January transfer window.
Despite a challenging start to the season raising doubts about manager Russell Martin’s suitability for the job, Southampton has seen improvement under his guidance. Adams played a crucial role in the team’s early-season success, but a subsequent dip in form has left his future uncertain as Southampton aims for an immediate return to the Premier League after relegation in the 2022/23 season.
Adams, who joined Southampton from Birmingham City in 2019, thrived under former manager Ralph Hasenhüttl but faced challenges during the previous season, which led to managerial changes and eventual relegation.
During the 2023 summer transfer window, Adams expressed a desire to return to the Premier League and was linked with a move, particularly to Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, Southampton blocked the move, and Adams remained with the team until the opening of the winter transfer market in January 2024.
With Adams’ contract expiring in the summer of 2024 and his recent struggles in the Championship, journalist Dean Jones suggests that Adams may benefit from a transfer. Jones notes that Adams has not seemed in the right frame of mind since the failed move to Wolverhampton during the summer. While a return to the Premier League might be surprising, Jones indicates that several Premier League clubs might consider taking a chance on him in the January transfer window.
Adams faces competition with the return of Ross Stewart from injury, potentially impacting his playing time at Southampton. Jones speculates that Adams could look to leave St. Mary’s again in the upcoming January transfer window. Despite the uncertainties surrounding Adams, Jones also believes there is a good chance that loan players Flynn Downes and Taylor Harwood-Bellis will continue their stint at St. Mary’s beyond the current season.
