The San Antonio Spurs are facing a difficult stretch as interim head coach Mitch Johnson has shared concerning news regarding the team’s final 25 games of the 2024-25 season. With Victor Wembanyama out for the year and Gregg Popovich stepping away from the sideline, the Spurs are now navigating an uphill battle as they approach the home stretch of the season.
During a recent press conference, Mitch Johnson addressed the growing challenges the team is facing, acknowledging that the Spurs are in a tough spot both in terms of roster depth and overall performance.
“We’re in a position where we have to adjust on the fly,” Johnson said. “Losing Wemby was already a big blow, and now we’re dealing with a roster that’s been stretched thin. We’ll continue to fight, but we understand the challenges ahead.”
With 25 games remaining, the Spurs find themselves near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, and without their franchise cornerstone in Wembanyama, the team is struggling to find consistency on both ends of the floor.
Johnson pointed out several critical areas where the Spurs must improve if they hope to finish the season on a competitive note:
Defensive Struggles Without Wembanyama – The 7’4” phenom was the backbone of San Antonio’s defense, and without him, the team has struggled to protect the rim and contain opposing scorers.
Offensive Efficiency – With Wemby out, the offensive burden has fallen on De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell, but inconsistency and lack of depth have made it difficult for the Spurs to execute their game plan effectively.
Player Development Focus – With the postseason now an unlikely goal, Johnson emphasized that the final stretch of games will be about developing young talent, particularly Stephon Castle, Malaki Branham, and Jeremy Sochan, as they look ahead to the future.
The Spurs are expected to experiment with different lineups, including more small-ball rotations and giving younger players extended minutes. While the season may not end with a playoff push, Johnson and his coaching staff are focused on building a strong foundation for next year.
Spurs fans may have to endure a challenging final stretch, but with Wembanyama set to return next season and a potential high draft pick on the horizon, the future of the franchise remains promising.
