The San Diego Padres are reportedly open to trading several of their high-priced contracts this season. With significant financial commitments to a few key players, the organization is exploring trade options, making almost no one on the roster untouchable.
According to Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report, the Padres could move star infielder Luis Arráez. Rymer identified the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, and Seattle Mariners as potential landing spots.
“Arraez has won three straight batting titles, and his career average (.323) matches the second-best hitter from last season,” Rymer wrote. “Since 2019, he has swung and missed only 405 times, a number that was surpassed by eight hitters in 2024 alone. However, he primarily hits singles, rarely walks, and is a below-average defender at both second base and first base. Despite these limitations, his ability to make contact makes him a valuable leadoff hitter, and his trade market is expected to be strong.”
Among the potential suitors, the Reds seem like an unlikely destination unless injuries force their hand. With Matt McLain and Gavin Lux covering second base and Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Jeimer Candelario, and Spencer Steer offering solid infield depth, Cincinnati may not have a pressing need for Arráez.
The Mariners, on the other hand, are in dire need of offensive production, making them a logical fit. The Tigers and Giants could also benefit from adding a first baseman, with both teams seeking a high-contact hitter to bolster their lineups.
As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Padres navigate their financial situation and whether Arráez ultimately finds a new home with one of these four teams.
