The Philadelphia Phillies have officially named as their Opening Day starter for the 2025 season. The 34-year-old right-hander, who has been a cornerstone of the Phillies’ rotation since signing with the team in 2020, will take the mound on March 28 as Philadelphia kicks off its campaign against the Atlanta Braves.
Manager Rob Thomson made the announcement on Monday, confirming what many had anticipated throughout spring training. Wheeler, coming off another stellar season in 2024, remains one of the most reliable arms in the National League. Last season, he posted a 3.61 ERA with 212 strikeouts over 192 innings, reinforcing his role as the Phillies’ ace.
“Zack has been everything you want in a top-of-the-rotation guy,” Thomson said. “He’s a competitor, a leader in our clubhouse, and someone we trust in big moments. There was never really a doubt about who would get the ball to start the season.”
Wheeler has been instrumental in Philadelphia’s recent success, including back-to-back deep postseason runs in 2022 and 2023. His ability to deliver in crucial moments has solidified his status as the Phillies’ go-to starter, even as he enters his mid-30s.
Despite speculation that fellow right-hander Aaron Nola or offseason acquisition Yoshinobu Yamamoto could be in contention for the Opening Day nod, Wheeler’s experience and consistency made him the clear choice. Nola, who re-signed with the Phillies on a seven-year deal this offseason, will slot in behind Wheeler as the team’s No. 2 starter.
The Phillies enter 2025 with championship aspirations, and having Wheeler set the tone early will be key to their success. Facing a loaded Braves lineup led by Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson, Wheeler will be tested immediately. However, given his track record, the Phillies are confident he’s up to the challenge.
With the announcement, Wheeler will make his fourth Opening Day start for Philadelphia, further cementing his legacy as one of the franchise’s most dependable arms in recent history.
