Hull City’s manager, Liam Rosenior, offered high praise for Southampton’s Russell Martin following their dramatic 2-1 victory on Saturday. In the dying moments of the game, substitute Ryan Fraser scored with a volley from Flynn Downes’ cross, leading to exuberant celebrations by Southampton’s players in front of their dedicated supporters, who had overcome travel disruptions and poor weather to make it to Hull.
When asked about the exuberant celebrations, Rosenior expressed understanding, saying, “They should celebrate, as they clinched the victory in the final minute. I’d do the same. Winning games holds immense significance in this sport, and that’s why we’re here—to win.
Credit to Russell Martin; “I believe he is an exceptional coach”. His team boasts talented players, and they deserve praise for scoring at the last moment. We must accept this disappointment and use it to ensure it doesn’t recur.”
This result marked the end of Hull’s unbeaten home record, after drawing their last four games at the MKM Stadium. During the second half, Hull appeared poised to score a second goal but was thwarted by last-ditch defensive efforts from Southampton. However, the Saints weathered the challenging period in the match and relied on their physical conditioning to secure the crucial goal in injury time.
Rosenior further commented on the high-energy nature of the game, particularly praising Jean Michaël Seri, who had returned from international duty the day before and was kept on for the entire 90 minutes due to his significant contribution to the team’s energy levels. He described the match as a contest to see which team could capitalize on their chances, acknowledging that outcomes in football can sometimes be unpredictable, with victories and defeats dependent on various factors.
