The Philadelphia Phillies, fresh off a stellar 95-67 season that earned them their first National League East title since 2011, are making bold moves to revamp their roster following a disappointing postseason exit. The latest buzz surrounds their high-profile acquisition of two-time All-Star Alex Bregman, marking a major step in their quest for a World Series title.
Aiming High for 2025
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski emphasized the team’s readiness to explore all options in shaping a championship-caliber roster for 2025. Speaking on October 15, he shared his open-minded approach:
“The reality is, we have a lot of good players. I think we just have to be open-minded to exploring what’s out there, talk to some clubs, and see what ends up happening,” Dombrowski said, as reported by MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “Sometimes you trade good players for good players.”
One area primed for change is third base. While Alec Bohm delivered a career-best 97 RBIs and earned his first All-Star selection in 2024, his struggles in the NLDS against the New York Mets (.220 OPS in 14 plate appearances) fueled speculation about his future with the team.
Enter Alex Bregman
Bregman, a proven postseason performer and two-time World Series champion, brings exactly the kind of experience and leadership the Phillies need. Since debuting in 2016, he’s appeared in 99 playoff games, making him a coveted addition for any contender.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer had previously identified the Phillies as a strong potential landing spot for Bregman, alongside other suitors like the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers. The Phillies’ decision to secure him signals their commitment to winning now.
A Blockbuster Deal
Bregman’s signing didn’t come cheap. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projected a seven-year, $189 million contract for the 30-year-old, a price the Phillies were willing to pay to strengthen their lineup and fill the void at third base.
This move underscores Philadelphia’s determination to end its championship drought, which has stretched since 2008. Pairing Bregman with their already formidable roster positions the Phillies as serious contenders heading into 2025.
With Bregman aboard, the Phillies have set the tone for what promises to be an exciting offseason, and their fans can now dream of a deep October run next year.
