The Philadelphia Phillies are making headlines once again, finalizing a blockbuster deal to acquire $160 million pitcher Bryan Woo as they aim to revamp their roster for the 2025 season. The move comes as the team looks to fill the void left by third baseman Alec Bohm, who was included in the trade to the Seattle Mariners.
Woo, 24, is coming off an impressive 2024 season with Seattle, where he posted a 3.42 ERA and struck out 193 batters over 185 innings. Known for his electric fastball and sharp secondary pitches, Woo quickly became one of the most sought-after young arms on the market. The Phillies, determined to solidify their rotation alongside Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, have secured Woo on a six-year deal worth $160 million.
“This is a game-changing addition for us,” said Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. “Bryan Woo has the talent and mentality to anchor our rotation for years to come. We’re thrilled to have him in Philadelphia.”
As part of the deal, Alec Bohm, who had an inconsistent 2024 campaign, heads to Seattle. Despite earning an All-Star nod last season, Bohm’s second-half struggles raised questions about his long-term fit in Philadelphia. With this trade, the Phillies not only address a pressing need in their pitching staff but also open up opportunities to reshape their infield.
Woo expressed excitement about joining the Phillies, stating, “It’s an honor to be part of a team with such a passionate fan base and a strong commitment to winning. I’m ready to get to work and help bring a championship to Philadelphia.”
The Phillies now boast one of the league’s most formidable rotations, with Woo bringing youth and upside to complement their veteran starters. With the 2025 season on the horizon, this move positions the team as strong contenders in the National League and reaffirms their aggressive approach to building a championship-caliber roster.
