The Pittsburgh Steelers have made headlines by signing former Michigan standout Julius Welschof, a polarizing pass rusher with immense potential. Welschof first joined the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft, quickly catching the attention of coaches with his coachability and high football IQ.
Hailing from Miesbach, Germany, Welschof’s journey to the NFL is nothing short of remarkable. Having only picked up football five years ago, he remains relatively inexperienced but boasts raw talent that has intrigued the Steelers’ coaching staff. During the preseason, Welschof delivered an eye-catching performance against the Detroit Lions, recording two sacks before a knee injury in that same game temporarily derailed his progress.
Despite the setback, Welschof has returned to the team, donning a knee brace in his first practice back. He will wear No. 45 as he looks to carve out a role on the Steelers’ practice squad, joining fellow outside linebackers Ade Ogundeji and Eku Leota.
Veteran pass rusher Alex Highsmith, who has been dealing with a low ankle sprain, remains optimistic about returning to action for Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. In the meantime, Welschof offers additional depth and a high-upside option for the Steelers’ defense.
Steelers outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin described Welschof as a “ball of clay” in August, referencing his raw ability and untapped potential. Now healthy and back with the team, Welschof is determined to prove he belongs.
“This is a big opportunity for Julius,” Martin said. “His work ethic and willingness to learn make him someone we’re excited to develop further.”
With the 2024 season nearing its midpoint, Welschof’s return adds an intriguing element to the Steelers’ pass-rushing corps as they aim to strengthen their defensive depth and maintain their competitive edge in the AFC North.
