The New York Mets are making headlines with plans for an offseason spending spree unlike any other. After a relatively quiet winter last year, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns appears ready to go all-in, with the club reportedly targeting several top free agents, including superstar outfielder Juan Soto.
Soto, 26, is expected to command a historic contract that could exceed $700 million. While many speculated that signing Soto might force the Mets to part ways with homegrown slugger Pete Alonso, FOX Sports’ Deesha Thosar reports the organization has the financial flexibility to keep both stars and more.
Such a bold approach would solidify the Mets’ commitment to winning a World Series in 2025 after falling just two wins short of the 2024 championship. Along with Soto and Alonso, Stearns is expected to prioritize pitching to fill key gaps left by the departures of Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and José Quintana in free agency.
Mets’ Predicted $945 Million Haul
FOX43’s Cale Ahearn anticipates the Mets will sign four of MLB’s top 50 free agents this winter, including:
- Juan Soto (OF): 14 years, $700 million
- Pete Alonso (1B): 5 years, $130 million
- Sean Manaea (SP): 3 years, $60 million
- Tanner Scott (RP): 4 years, $55 million
This unprecedented spending would bring the Mets’ total offseason commitment to $945 million, with potential for additional moves to address roster needs.
Addressing Rotation Needs
Stearns has stated that improving the starting rotation is a top priority. Rumors suggest the Mets are pursuing one of the top three free-agent starters: Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, or Blake Snell. Adding a top-tier arm would complement the team’s already formidable offense and bullpen improvements.
Building on Momentum
Following their surprise postseason run in 2024, the Mets are determined to keep the momentum going. A spending spree of this magnitude would mark a new era of aggressiveness for the franchise, positioning them as serious contenders for a World Series title.
All eyes will be on Queens this winter as the Mets aim to solidify themselves as one of MLB’s premier powerhouses heading into 2025.
