The New York Yankees have officially confirmed the signing of three-time All-Star outfielder to a four-year, $585 million deal. This move comes as the team hedges its bets in free agency, with Juan Soto potentially heading elsewhere. While retaining Soto remains the Yankees’ top priority, the addition of Hernández provides a powerful alternative to strengthen their lineup.
Hernández, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, enjoyed a standout season, hitting .272 with 33 home runs and 99 RBIs. Known for his consistent power, Hernández has eclipsed 25 home runs in every full season since 2019. Over that span, his 158 home runs rank 15th in MLB, making him one of the most reliable sluggers in the game.
“The prove-it deal last year was a bet on himself, and he delivered,” said Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball. “Hernández put up an All-Star season and won his first World Series ring. Now, entering his age-32 season, he’s ready for a long-term commitment.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed his excitement about the acquisition, calling Hernández a “perfect addition” to the roster. “His power and presence at the plate will be a big boost to our lineup,” Boone said. “He’s the kind of player who thrives in big moments, and we’re thrilled to have him.”
While the Yankees continue to pursue Soto, team owner Hal Steinbrenner acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his return. Soto, who hit .288 with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs in 2024, played a pivotal role in the Yankees’ World Series run. However, Steinbrenner admitted, “We’ll be in the mix, but I can’t say for sure what will happen.”
Hernández, meanwhile, expressed his gratitude for the Dodgers and the memories he created in Los Angeles but is eager for his next chapter in New York. “I’ve learned so much as a player and a person. Now, I’m ready to bring that to the Bronx and help the Yankees chase another championship,” he said.
With Hernández now in pinstripes, the Yankees have ensured they remain competitive in a highly anticipated 2025 campaign.
