The Phillies have addressed key needs on both sides of the ball, starting with the addition of elite right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes. The four-time All-Star has signed a five-year, $170 million contract to lead the Phillies’ rotation. Known for his precision and dominance, Burnes boasts a career 3.19 ERA and a .212 opponent batting average. He is expected to anchor a pitching staff that aims to rival the league’s best.
The Phillies also bolstered their lineup with the acquisition of slugger Christian Yelich. The 2018 NL MVP has signed an eight-year, $226 million deal, adding power and consistency to an already formidable offense. Yelich’s ability to hit for average and provide timely power makes him a perfect fit in the Phillies’ lineup. He will complement stars like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, giving Philadelphia one of the most feared offenses in the league.
Rounding out the trio of signings is right-hander Luis Severino, who joins the Phillies on a three-year, $48 million contract. Severino, a two-time All-Star, has battled injuries in recent seasons but showed flashes of his former dominance in 2024. The Phillies are betting on his upside as a mid-rotation arm with the potential to shine in big games.
“These additions signal our commitment to winning now and in the future,” said Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. “Burnes, Yelich, and Severino are proven performers who will make an immediate impact and help us compete at the highest level.”
With these signings, the Phillies have addressed critical needs in their rotation and lineup, positioning themselves as strong contenders in the NL East and beyond. As they set their sights on a World Series run, Phillies fans have every reason to be excited for the 2025 season.
