BREAKING NEWS: Just In Mets Make First Position Player Signings This Offseason…

The New York Mets have made their first moves to bolster their position player depth this offseason, officially signing infielder Donovan Walton and outfielder Rafael Ortega to minor league deals, the team announced Monday.

Donovan Walton Joins as a Veteran Option

Walton, 29, joins the Mets organization after becoming a free agent earlier this month. The San Francisco Giants outrighted him off their 40-man roster following the 2024 season, paving the way for the Mets to bring him in as a seasoned depth piece. Known for his defensive versatility, Walton can play multiple infield positions and offers a reliable left-handed bat.

In his prior MLB stints with the Mariners and Giants, Walton showcased his adaptability and work ethic. While he spent most of 2024 in Triple-A, his strong .289 batting average and solid on-base skills highlight his ability to contribute offensively when called upon.

Rafael Ortega Returns to Queens

Outfielder Rafael Ortega, 33, is no stranger to the Mets, having spent part of the 2023 season with the team. Ortega played 47 games with the Mets that year, slashing .219/.341/.272 while providing speed and defensive versatility in the outfield. Capable of playing all three outfield positions, Ortega is particularly valuable as a center field option.

Ortega’s standout season came in 2021 with the Chicago Cubs, where he hit .291/.360/.463 with 11 home runs and 12 stolen bases in 103 games. The Mets are hopeful that Ortega can rediscover some of that form and provide depth and experience at both the Triple-A and MLB levels.

Building Depth for 2025

These signings reflect the Mets’ commitment to building a robust roster capable of weathering injuries and maintaining flexibility throughout the 2025 campaign. By adding Walton and Ortega, the organization secures proven players who can step up when needed.

While the Mets continue to target marquee free agents this offseason, these moves are a reminder that depth and versatility are just as critical for long-term success. Both Walton and Ortega will report to spring training with an opportunity to compete for spots on the Opening Day roster.
