The New York Mets are aiming big in this offseason’s free agency, with their sights set on superstar talent. Alongside rumored pursuits of outfielder Juan Soto and elite pitchers Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes, the Mets are also exploring a reunion with one of their own—fan-favorite slugger Pete Alonso.
Alonso, 29, has been a cornerstone for the Mets, spending the first six seasons of his MLB career in New York. Over that span, he showcased his incredible power, smashing 226 home runs across 846 games. Now a free agent, Alonso’s future with the Mets has become a hot topic of discussion.
MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand believes Alonso returning to Queens is a strong possibility. “Alonso is the biggest name among the Mets’ free agents, and while there’s been plenty of talk about New York pursuing Soto, a reunion with Alonso is definitely in play,” Feinsand noted. “He’s been the face of the franchise for several years, and his big October moments didn’t hurt his case either.”
Mets fans have been vocal in their desire to see Alonso back in blue and orange. However, as is often the case in free agency, financial factors will likely play a decisive role. Spotrac projects Alonso’s next contract to be worth $174 million—a significant investment for any team.
The Mets’ ability to re-sign Alonso could hinge on their pursuit of other marquee players, particularly Juan Soto. If the Mets secure Soto, it may limit their flexibility to bring back Alonso. Still, with Alonso’s long-standing connection to the team and his pivotal role in recent seasons, he remains a top priority for the Mets and their owner, Steve Cohen.
For now, Mets fans can remain hopeful that their beloved slugger will return to continue building his legacy in Queens.
