Official Mets News: Mets Officially Add Four-time All-Star in $210 million Blockbuster Deal…

The New York Mets are taking significant strides to solidify their roster following their impressive 2024 season, which included a surprising trip to the National League Championship Series. With approximately $180 million cleared from payroll and a host of roster needs, the Mets are making waves this offseason. Reports suggest they are on the verge of signing four-time All-Star and 2021 Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes to a massive seven-year, $210 million deal.

Burnes, one of the most coveted free-agent pitchers this offseason, has been a model of consistency and durability throughout his career. With a 3.19 ERA, 1.063 WHIP, and four All-Star appearances in seven MLB seasons, he is viewed as a top-tier option to anchor any rotation. Notably, Burnes delivered some of his best seasons under the stewardship of Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns when both were with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Bleacher Report analyst Zachary Rymer emphasized Burnes’ appeal as a reliable and dominant ace. “Burnes has never been on the injured list with an arm injury, making him something of a pitching superman,” Rymer explained. His durability and effectiveness make him a centerpiece acquisition for a Mets team aiming to retool its pitching staff.

The Mets’ rotation currently lacks depth, with only Kodai Senga as a reliable returning starter. The potential addition of Burnes could position him as the ace of the staff, while New York may still seek to re-sign Sean Manaea or Luis Severino and explore additional arms for their rotation.

With owner Steve Cohen’s deep pockets and a mandate to build a championship-caliber team, the Mets appear poised for a dynamic offseason. Adding Burnes would not only address a critical need but also signal the team’s intent to compete aggressively in 2025. This deal could be the first domino in a series of blockbuster moves for the Mets this winter.
