The New York Mets are reportedly on the verge of acquiring Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet in a significant five-player trade proposal, an addition that could address major gaps in their pitching rotation. With the recent departure of Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, and Sean Manaea to free agency, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns is exploring ways to bolster the rotation, and Crochet has emerged as a key target.
Chicago opted not to trade Crochet at the midseason deadline, but White Sox GM Chris Getz is now reportedly motivated to deal him before the 2025 season. The 25-year-old left-hander posted a solid first full season as a starter in 2024, recording a 3.58 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and an impressive 209 strikeouts over 146 innings, though his 6-12 record reflected the struggles of a rebuilding Chicago team. Currently earning a manageable $2.9 million in arbitration, Crochet remains under team control through 2026, making him a valuable addition with both immediate impact and financial flexibility.
During an episode of SNY’s Baseball Night in New York, former Mets GM Zack Scott proposed a five-player trade framework that could bring Crochet to Queens:
Mets receive:
- LHP Garrett Crochet
White Sox receive:
- Jett Williams (INF/OF)
- Ronny Mauricio (INF)
- Brett Baty (INF)
- Jesus Baez (INF)
This package includes three of the Mets’ top 14 prospects, with Williams (ranked 2nd), Mauricio (6th), and Baez (14th) as high-upside prospects for the White Sox. Brett Baty, who has shown potential but struggled at the MLB level, also adds value as a former top prospect. This deal would resemble Chicago’s recent approach in trading Dylan Cease to the Padres, another young, controllable pitcher who drew significant interest across the league.
Whether this proposal is enough depends on the White Sox’s evaluation of the Mets’ prospects and the offers from other interested teams. However, acquiring Crochet would provide the Mets with a potential long-term solution in the rotation and reinforce their commitment to building a competitive roster for the 2025 season and beyond.
