Mets manager Carlos Mendoza recently hinted at a potential solution if star first baseman Pete Alonso departs from the team. During an offseason interview, Mendoza mentioned that Christian Walker, a talented slugger currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks, could be a strong fit for the Mets if Alonso’s future with the team changes.
Walker, who has displayed consistent power and defensive prowess, emerged as a prime candidate due to his performance over recent seasons, providing a mix of reliable offense and impressive fielding at first base.
Alonso, a cornerstone for the Mets with his home-run-hitting prowess and fan following, has been at the center of trade rumors, which raised questions about how the Mets might proceed. Walker, with his slugging capabilities, would offer a replacement that doesn’t deviate drastically from Alonso’s skill set.
His 33 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2023 have put him among the league’s elite power hitters, making him a viable option to “fill the gap” if Alonso departs.
