The New York Mets have officially announced the acquisition of Desi Druschel, former Yankees assistant pitching coach, to bolster their coaching staff. Druschel, who held the same role with the Yankees over the last three seasons, will now join the Mets, working under pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. The move is seen as part of the Mets’ commitment to improving their pitching performance as they look to enhance their rotation and bullpen in the upcoming 2025 season.
Druschel brings a deep coaching background, having worked with the Yankees’ minor league system as the manager of pitch development before being promoted to assistant pitching coach in 2021. Under his tenure, the Yankees’ pitching staff recorded a collective ERA of 3.68 over three seasons, ranking among the top four in the MLB during that period. This solid performance is a testament to his impact on their pitching, which Mets leadership hopes will translate to similar success with their squad.
With the Mets ending the 2024 season at 15th in the league with a 3.96 ERA, Druschel’s expertise is anticipated to be an asset as the team likely restructures its pitching roster. Several pitchers, including Sean Manaea and Jose Quintana, have entered free agency, meaning the Mets’ pitching staff could see substantial changes by Opening Day 2025. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns is expected to focus on both free agency and trades, as Druschel works alongside Hefner to prepare and optimize the staff for the coming season.
The addition of Druschel aligns with the Mets’ broader strategy to enhance their player development and maximize pitching depth, a crucial aspect as they aim for a strong rebound in 2025.
