The Miami Hurricanes suffered a tough upset loss to Georgia Tech in Week 11, ending their unbeaten streak and shaking their postseason aspirations. Head coach Mario Cristobal addressed several issues that contributed to the defeat, emphasizing the defensive breakdowns and offensive struggles.
Georgia Tech (6-4, 4-3 ACC) executed a game plan focused on limiting Miami quarterback Cam Ward’s opportunities by emphasizing a strong running game. Miami’s defense, led by coordinator Lance Guidry, had its most challenging performance of the season, allowing 271 rushing yards—a season-high for the Hurricanes. Notably, on a critical third-and-18, Miami’s defense allowed a 27-yard pass, which ultimately led to a Georgia Tech touchdown, extending their lead and weakening Miami’s comeback chances.
Miami’s offense, usually high-scoring, struggled with consistency, converting only three of ten third downs. Ward, a Heisman hopeful, threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns but missed key opportunities and was sacked at a crucial moment late in the game. Additionally, Cristobal’s timeout call in the closing minutes, meant to avoid a penalty, underscored Miami’s struggles with clock management.
With their ACC and playoff hopes still hanging on, the Hurricanes will need to address these issues to stay competitive in their remaining games.
