The New York Mets are set for an active offseason, with several big moves anticipated. While they’re in pursuit of star hitters Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, starting pitching has also emerged as a top priority for the club.
General manager David Stearns emphasized the need for rotation depth, stating, “Starting pitching is certainly a priority for us.” The Mets had significant innings contributed by free-agent pitchers Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, and Luis Severino, who all made major contributions in 2024 but are now available on the open market. While bringing back at least one of these pitchers is on the table, the Mets are prepared to explore other free-agent options.
Mets Eyeing Free Agency to Bolster Starting Rotation
After a deep postseason run in 2024, the Mets are building their pitching staff around standout Kodai Senga. With the departure of three core starters, New York is on the hunt for reliable arms to support Senga and sustain their playoff hopes. Owner Steve Cohen has shown a willingness to spend, making it likely the Mets will actively pursue top pitching talent.
Their approach, however, may hinge on their success with Soto and Alonso. If the Mets secure both sluggers, they may shift focus toward solid, cost-effective pitchers to round out the rotation. But if they only sign one or neither, they could go after premier starting pitchers to enhance the rotation’s impact.
The Mets are committed to building a contender and will be weighing trades and free-agent deals to ensure pitching depth, aiming for a balanced roster with a mix of reliable bats and a fortified rotation for 2025.
