The New York Mets have officially announced a major move, reportedly signing top free-agent infielder to a seven-year, $160 million deal. The team aims to bolster its infield with the 29-year-old Adames, known for his powerful bat and solid glove.
While Adames has primarily played shortstop in his career, the Mets intend for him to transition to third base, which could be an adjustment for the infielder. With Francisco Lindor holding down shortstop, the Mets are betting on Adames’s versatility and hoping he’ll accept the new position. If successful, this shift would also allow Mark Vientos, who had a standout postseason at third base, to move to first—a move that may signal changing dynamics around Pete Alonso’s future with the team.
Adames, who recorded a .251 average with a .794 OPS, 32 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases with the Milwaukee Brewers last season, brings an enticing mix of power, speed, and experience. As one of the top infielders in free agency alongside Alex Bregman, his signing is a major offseason victory for the Mets.
However, the team still faces the challenge of convincing Adames to adjust to third base with other teams also reportedly interested. This deal underlines the Mets’ commitment to strengthening their infield for a competitive 2025 season.
