The Philadelphia Phillies are gearing up for a pivotal offseason after an underwhelming playoff run. Despite clinching the NL East for the first time since 2011, their season ended in the Division Series against the Mets, raising questions about how they’ll adjust their roster to remain competitive.
While superstar Juan Soto remains a primary target, the Phillies are preparing a backup plan in case they lose out on him. They’ve reportedly been linked to Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who could provide valuable infield flexibility. Bregman, a two-time All-Star, is open to playing both second and third base—a factor his agent, Scott Boras, emphasized at the MLB general manager meetings. Boras noted that Bregman’s leadership, defensive versatility, and postseason experience make him a rare commodity on the market.
If the Phillies acquire Bregman, they would have multiple infield configurations to consider. The team could retain All-Star Alec Bohm at third while slotting Bregman in at second base, which would open the door for trade discussions involving current second baseman Bryson Stott. Alternatively, Bregman could anchor third if Bohm or Stott were included in trade packages for additional pitching or outfield depth.
This past season, Bregman showcased his power, recording 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 79 runs with a .453 slugging percentage. He’s appeared sparingly at second base but has maintained a flawless fielding record in his limited appearances there.
With one of the most aggressive front offices in baseball, the Phillies are aiming to add star power to keep pace in a competitive National League. Bregman could be a significant addition, and the Phillies’ willingness to adapt their roster demonstrates they’re committed to staying on top.
