The Philadelphia Phillies are setting the stage for an active offseason, with five notable players officially heading to free agency. As the team looks to adjust its roster and make strategic moves, right-handers Yunior Marte, Luis Ortiz, and Freddy Tarnok, left-hander Kolby Allard, and infielder Rodolfo Castro are the latest to depart.
These players, each of whom spent some time on the Phillies’ big-league roster in 2024, join Jeff Hoffman, Carlos Estévez, and Spencer Turnbull as members of the 2024 squad entering the open market.
Yunior Marte: The 29-year-old reliever struggled in 2024, posting a 6.92 ERA over 26 innings with 23 strikeouts and 15 walks. Marte’s inconsistent performance on the mound made him a non-essential piece as the Phillies look for bullpen reinforcements.
Luis Ortiz: Ortiz appeared only once in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery, limiting his impact this season. The 29-year-old’s experience could still appeal to teams looking for a depth option in the bullpen.
Kolby Allard: Once a promising first-round pick, Allard posted a 5.00 ERA over seven games (four starts) for the Phillies. His inconsistencies have led to free agency, where he’s likely to sign a minor-league deal.
Freddy Tarnok: Although he didn’t make it to the majors this season, Tarnok had a rough year in the minors, logging a 7.39 ERA across two minor league affiliates. He’ll aim for a fresh start with another team in 2025.
Rodolfo Castro: Acquired from Pittsburgh in 2023, Castro saw limited action this season, spending most of the year in the minors and ultimately missing the rest of the season due to an August injury.
The Phillies are gearing up for substantial changes, with this group of free agents signaling a fresh approach to building a competitive roster for 2025.
