The Philadelphia Phillies, after a strong 2024 regular season, are taking significant steps to reshape their bullpen following a disappointing postseason. Despite an impressive eight players making the All-Star team, the Phillies faltered in October, falling short of winning any playoff series. The front office is now setting the stage for major changes, and MLB insider Jim Bowden suggests that bold moves are on the horizon.
In a recent prediction, Bowden foresees the Phillies signing left-hander Tanner Scott to a four-year, $60 million deal, signaling a revamped approach to their bullpen strategy. Scott, who split the season between the Marlins and Padres, put up remarkable numbers, posting a 1.18 ERA in 45.2 innings with Miami before being traded to San Diego, where he maintained a strong 2.73 ERA. Known for his velocity and effectiveness in high-leverage situations, Scott was rumored to be a Phillies target before the Padres acquired him at the trade deadline.
Bowden’s prediction also suggests that the Phillies may part ways with current high-leverage relievers Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez. Hoffman, an All-Star in 2024, recorded a 2.17 ERA across 66 1/3 innings during the regular season but struggled in the postseason. Estévez, acquired from the Angels in exchange for top prospects, had a solid season with a 2.45 ERA, showing consistency and effectiveness before heading into free agency.
With these anticipated changes, the Phillies appear ready to invest heavily in securing a dominant bullpen to better compete in future postseason runs. Whether the team will re-sign current relievers or bring in fresh talent remains to be seen, but fans can expect significant moves this offseason.
