The New York Mets’ trade deadline acquisition of Tyler Zuber from the Tampa Bay Rays is shaping up to be a regrettable move. On July 30, the Mets traded a promising prospect, Paul Gervase, for Zuber, hoping to strengthen their bullpen depth.
However, Zuber’s performance in Triple-A Syracuse was underwhelming, posting a 12.38 ERA and struggling with control issues, including an alarming 8.4 walks per nine innings.
Meanwhile, Gervase has flourished in the Rays organization. After initially showing promise with the Mets, Gervase improved his control significantly in the Rays’ Double-A system, reducing his walks to 1.5 per nine innings and increasing his strikeout rate to an impressive 15.8 per nine. With a low WHIP of 0.79, Gervase seems to be finding his stride and could develop into a reliable reliever.
In hindsight, this trade may have cost the Mets a talented arm while adding minimal value to their own roster, earning it a failing grade for the 2024 trade deadline.
