The Chicago White Sox have officially declined their $25 million club option on third baseman Yoán Moncada for 2025, opting instead for a $5 million buyout, signaling the end of his tenure with the team. Moncada’s time with the White Sox was marked by high expectations, including an impressive 2019 season, but ultimately fell short due to a mix of declining performance and frequent injuries.
After eight seasons in Chicago, Moncada posted a .254/.332/.425 slash line with 14.7 WAR, yet missed significant time in recent years due to injury—playing in only 43% of games since 2022, with just 12 games this past season. His final appearance came in September, striking out as a pinch-hitter, a telling end to a tenure that, while promising early on, became emblematic of the White Sox’s broader challenges during their “contention window.”
Despite mixed reviews from fans, Moncada’s overall value remains solid, ranking as the 46th-best hitter in White Sox history based on WAR. His departure follows similar offseason exits from key players, including Liam Hendriks and Tim Anderson, further signaling a period of reset for the White Sox.
