The New York Mets have signed 33-year-old right-handed reliever to a minor league contract, adding a seasoned arm with nine years of MLB experience. Devenski has previously pitched for the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, and Tampa Bay Rays, notably winning a World Series title with the Astros in 2017.
What Devenski Brings to the Mets
Known as “Devo,” Devenski made a name for himself during his time with Houston. He earned an All-Star selection in 2017 and was fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2016. His most effective pitch has long been his changeup, which produced 250 whiffs in 2023 and remained his go-to in 2024, used in nearly half his pitch mix. While his 2024 stint with the Rays was challenging, ending with a 6.75 ERA over 19 games and a stint on the injured list due to knee tendinitis, he performed well in Triple-A. Across 26 appearances, he recorded a solid 3.10 ERA, followed by an impressive 2.35 ERA with Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate, Tacoma Rainiers, in his season finish.
A Potential Comeback in New York
The Mets see Devenski as a low-risk, high-upside signing, hoping he can regain his effective form as a middle reliever or setup man. His time in Triple-A allowed him to refine his fastball control and work on his pitch accuracy, aiming to rediscover the success he saw earlier in his career. With his experience and proven track record in high-leverage situations, Devenski brings valuable depth to the Mets’ bullpen and a potential boost if he returns to form.
This signing could be an under-the-radar success for the Mets, adding a veteran presence to their roster as they look to strengthen their bullpen options for the upcoming season.
