The Cleveland Browns have found a temporary solution to fill the void left by Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury, signing former New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe. Zappe, who had a standout performance against the Browns in 2022, will now be tasked with stepping in as Cleveland deals with the fallout of Watson’s torn Achilles.
Watson, who is weighing surgery options and considering his recovery timeline, leaves a significant gap in the Browns’ offense. While head coach Kevin Stefanski evaluates options like backup QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR), the team has officially moved to add depth to the position by bringing in Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.
Zappe is no stranger to success against the Browns. In his 2022 start for the Patriots, he completed 71% of his passes for 309 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions, helping New England secure a win over Cleveland. Throughout his career, Zappe has demonstrated promise, completing 63% of his passes for 2,053 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Now officially part of the Browns’ active 53-man roster, Zappe will be expected to provide experience and stability as the team navigates the remainder of the season without their franchise quarterback. For Jerod Mayo and the Patriots, the loss of a promising young quarterback like Zappe marks another setback in their rebuilding efforts.
