Effort was one area where the Dallas Cowboys fell short on Sunday. In a crushing 47-9 defeat to the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium during Week 6, the Cowboys were outplayed on both offense and defense. The Lions dominated the game, racking up 492 total yards compared to the Cowboys’ 251. One of the Cowboys’ biggest struggles came in the trenches, as they gave up 184 rushing yards to the Lions while managing only 53 rushing yards of their own.
Cornerback Trevon Diggs found himself under fire on social media after a particular play against the Lions. Cameras captured Diggs seemingly stepping out of position to tackle Lions running back David Montgomery. The six-foot-two, 195-pound Diggs appeared hesitant to engage the five-foot-11, 224-pound Montgomery, raising questions among fans.
Though Diggs was listed on the Week 6 injury report with an ankle issue, he had no injury designation for Sunday’s game. Fans quickly voiced their frustrations online, criticizing his lack of aggression in the Cowboys’ blowout loss.
“He’s been that guy since entering the league,” one fan wrote. “This looks like one of those ‘business decisions’ Antonio Pierce mentioned weeks ago with the Raiders. Tuna and Jimmy wouldn’t stand for it.”
Another fan commented, “I remember when people were hyping him as the best corner in the league because of interceptions. He hasn’t locked down a receiver since he got here. If he’s got his brother Stefon’s mindset, he doesn’t have the heart to tackle at corner.”
“He’s soft, but he sells jerseys,” another user added, while one pointed out, “He didn’t even try to pursue after missing the tackle, even though the runner kept going.”
“This was definitely a business decision,” a fan claimed, echoing the frustration of many others. “There are a few plays where he shows he’s not afraid of contact, but far more plays like this that suggest otherwise.”
Despite being a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, Diggs is under scrutiny for his performance. So far this season, he has recorded 23 tackles, three passes defensed, and one interception.
