Former Mariners catcher and fan favorite Dan Wilson has shared a disheartening message with the Seattle faithful as rumors circulate about the Mariners potentially trading one of their young, talented starting pitchers to address offensive shortcomings. The decision to part with one of the team’s cornerstone pitchers could signal a major shift in the Mariners’ future plans.
The possibility of such a trade has been a topic of concern within the organization and among fans. Even star outfielder Julio Rodríguez voiced his apprehension last offseason, urging the Mariners not to trade any of their prized arms. “Don’t do it,” Rodríguez warned management. “That’s our cornerstone — that’s the team. They keep us in the game every single time. What I would like to see is just more support for them.”
Despite Rodríguez’s passionate plea, the Mariners are facing the pressing need to boost their offensive output, especially after missing the playoffs for the second straight year. While the team boasts one of the best pitching rotations in baseball — featuring young stars Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, and Bryan Woo — their struggle to score runs has put them in a difficult position.
As Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto stated, trading a starting pitcher to improve the offense is not Plan A, but he left the door open to the possibility, noting, “We’ll go into every offseason open to whatever ideas might make us better.” Industry sources have indicated that the Mariners have positioned themselves as “open to anything” when it comes to trade scenarios.
