The Dallas Cowboys are exploring a significant trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for star receiver Davante Adams, a six-time Pro Bowler. However, there have been mixed reports regarding the Cowboys’ level of interest in acquiring him.
If the Cowboys pursue Adams seriously, the cost could be substantial. According to Jon Machota from The Athletic, a potential trade package might include a third-round pick in 2025 and wide receiver Jalen Brooks. Machota noted, “The Raiders will likely receive better offers, but the Cowboys are limited in their ability to part with future draft picks.” The team’s financial commitments, including Dak Prescott’s record-setting contract and CeeDee Lamb’s lucrative deal, leave little room for additional expenditures. They are also expected to negotiate a significant contract extension for Micah Parsons soon.
While the Cowboys have pressing needs on their roster, particularly on the defensive line and at running back, owner and GM Jerry Jones has a history of pursuing standout receivers. He has made bold moves in the past, such as trading for Joey Galloway and Amari Cooper, and signing Terrell Owens.
Challenges in Acquiring Adams
A major hurdle for the Cowboys is Adams’ hefty five-year, $140 million contract. He has a cap hit of $25.3 million and a salary of $16.8 million for 2024, with two seasons left on his deal. The trade speculation heightened when Dianna Russini from The Athletic reported that both the Cowboys and the New York Jets were “monitoring” the situation with Adams. She indicated that while the Raiders are not in a hurry to make a trade, Adams is eager to leave.
Contrary to these reports, NFL Network’s Jane Slater suggested that the Cowboys are not seriously considering a trade for Adams. She highlighted financial constraints as a significant deterrent, quoting head coach Mike McCarthy’s respectful acknowledgment of Adams without delving into trade discussions. Slater stated, “Internally, I’m told the Cowboys aren’t in on Adams. They don’t have the money, and draft capital is more crucial than ever.”
With Brandin Cooks currently on Injured Reserve, the Cowboys are somewhat thin at wide receiver, relying heavily on CeeDee Lamb. Jalen Tolbert recently stepped up with a standout performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the financial implications of acquiring Adams may prevent the Cowboys from making a serious push for the star receiver.
