The Atlanta Braves have reportedly reached an agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers to sign experienced shortstop Willy Adames in a potential $29 million deal. This move is seen as a major upgrade to the Braves’ infield, as GM Alex Anthopoulos looks to bolster the roster for the 2025 season.
Adames, 29, had a standout season with the Brewers in 2024, posting an impressive .251/.331/.462 slash line, with career highs in home runs (32), RBIs (112), and stolen bases (21). His offensive output, including a 119 wRC+ and 4.8 fWAR according to Fangraphs, makes him a desirable addition to Atlanta’s lineup. While his defense may not quite match Orlando Arcia’s, who held the shortstop position for the Braves last season, Adames still maintained league-average fielding with 1 OAA (Outs Above Average).
MLB insider Jon Heyman hinted that the Braves have been eyeing Adames as a potential target for some time, especially given his powerful bat. Adames ranked in the 82nd percentile for barrel rate and 80th percentile for walk percentage, both qualities the Braves are looking to inject into their lineup.
The question remains whether Adames fits into the Braves’ long-term financial plans, as he’s expected to command a salary around $20 million annually. While Adames is the top shortstop in an otherwise weak free-agent class, Anthopoulos is known for being cautious with contracts that extend into a player’s mid-30s.
